Montagu C. Butler Library
The Montagu C. Butler Library stands in Barlaston, a village in the West Midlands, within the Wedgwood Memorial College. It holds one of the world’s largest collections of material about Esperanto, the planned language created in the late 19th century. The building was designed for this purpose and opened after the library moved from London in 2001. It sits beside the offices of the Esperanto Association of Britain, which organises courses and events. The library began with books owned by Montagu C. Butler, a leading Esperanto writer whose works include Step by Step in Esperanto and the Esperanto-English Dictionary. Over time it absorbed the association’s own library and grew into a research centre for Interlinguistics. Today it holds about 13 000 books plus archival papers tracing the movement’s history. Scholars and enthusiasts travel to consult original editions and rare pamphlets. Inside, visitors find quiet reading rooms lined with shelves of Esperanto titles in many languages. A catalogue lists every item so researchers can locate specific works quickly. The atmosphere is scholarly yet welcoming, with staff ready to help visitors explore the collection. Outside, the college grounds offer a peaceful setting for reflection after study.
