River Eden

The River Eden rises near Titsey in Surrey, at the foot of the North Downs. It flows south-west past Oxted, then turns east through Edenbridge and on to Kent. Near Crowhurst it meets the Gibbs Brook, and downstream it is joined by the Eden Brook. The river passes Hever Castle’s ornamental lake before joining the Medway at Penshurst. The Eden has powered mills since Roman times. Haxted Watermill in Edenbridge dates to the 16th century and worked until 1945. Its 1830 waterwheel still turns, driving three pairs of millstones. Middle Mill in Oxted survives as offices, and Coltsford Mill hosts corporate events beside a trout fishery. The river’s catchment lies mainly on Weald Clay, and its water feeds Bough Beech Reservoir. A walk along the Eden passes old mill sites and farmland. At Haxted the mill building houses a brasserie, its iron buckets now fibreglass. The river’s banks carry paths through quiet countryside towards Penshurst. Views open over meadows and wooded slopes, with the North Downs escarpment rising to the west.
