Mühlsteinbruch Scherer

The Mühlsteinbruch Scherer is a historic millstone quarry with an open-air site in the north-western part of the quarry. It lies in the town of Perg in Upper Austria and is protected as a monument. The entrance to the open-air area, showing the last traces of millstone extraction, is at the end of Mühlsteinstrasse. The site was once the largest millstone quarry in the region. In 1843 Benedikt Pillwein recorded its size as 11 509 square metres. The quarry wall stretches about 200 metres, twice the length of Perg’s main square. Millstones were cut here until the 1930s, and sand was still extracted until 1942. The open-air section was created in 1988 and received monument status in 2009 alongside other local sites. Visitors find a small open-air area with the quarry’s characteristic cutting grooves still visible. The rest of the quarry has been levelled and is freely accessible. The ensemble is listed among Perg’s sights along the Danube Cycle Path and the Danube Trail.
