Roßauer Lände

Roßauer Lände station sits beside the Donaukanal in Vienna’s ninth district, Alsergrund. The U4 line stops here between Mosergasse and the Siemens-Nixdorf-Steg bridge. The name recalls the old Rossau quarter and the street Rossauer Lände. The station opened in 1978 with two side platforms. It once belonged to the Vienna Steam City Railway, planned by Otto Wagner at the start of the 20th century. The building reflects Wagner’s early modern style, first used in 1901. After the monarchy ended, the station briefly carried the name Elisabethpromenade before reverting to Roßauer Lände. Steam trams ran until 1918, then electric light rail took over in 1925. The last tram left in 1978 when the U4 line began. An entrance on Grünentorgasse still shows the original reception structure with a fixed staircase. Visitors find two side platforms under the canopy of the Donaukanal. The northern lift leads to Seegasse, while the southern exit opens directly onto the promenade. The station’s 2000s redesign added barrier-free access. Along the canal, benches face the water and passing boats. The preserved Wagner entrance stands as a quiet reminder of the station’s past.
