Holyrood Palace

The Palace of Holyroodhouse stands at the foot of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, beside the ruins of Holyrood Abbey and within Holyrood Park. It has been the monarch’s official residence in Scotland since the 16th century and hosts state events and official meetings. The King’s Gallery, opened in 2002, displays works from the Royal Collection. The palace links directly to the abbey and its gardens, creating a single site of historic importance. Charles III spends a week there each summer to carry out engagements. The 16th-century apartments of Mary, Queen of Scots, and the State Apartments remain open to visitors when the royal family is away. During the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Lord High Commissioner resides here. Holyrood Abbey was founded in 1128 by David I and became a key royal and administrative centre. The Parliament of Scotland met there seven times between 1256 and 1410. Robert the Bruce signed the Treaty of Edinburgh–Northampton in the abbey’s King’s Chamber in 1328. Several Scottish kings were born, crowned, married or buried at Holyrood, including James II and James III. The abbey church’s nave survived the Reformation and served as the Canongate’s parish church. The palace itself began as a Gothic building constructed by James IV between 1501 and 1505, arranged around a quadrangle with royal lodgings, a chapel and a great hall. Visitors walk through the historic apartments where Mary, Queen of Scots, lived and worked. The State Apartments host official receptions and display royal collections. The King’s Gallery presents changing exhibitions of art from the Royal Collection. The ruins of the Augustinian abbey stand next to the palace, showing the scale of the original foundation. Holyrood Park surrounds the site, offering open ground once used for royal hunting and archery. The gardens contain traces of James IV’s menagerie and the remains of the 16th-century gatehouse. The palace’s stonework and surviving towers reflect centuries of royal building and adaptation.
