Kospoda Castle

Schloss Kospoda stands in Kospoda, a village in the Saale-Orla district of Thuringia. The estate was first mentioned in 1320 and was once the manor house of the Kospoth family. The present buildings are solid two- to three-storey rectangular structures in Neo-Renaissance style, built mainly between 1894 and 1901–02. The exterior still shows a grand, castle-like character that continues inside with period fittings from the turn of the 20th century. The estate is worth visiting for its well-preserved architecture and landscaped grounds. Between 1865 and 1892 a park was laid out on rolling terrain with rock gardens and tree groups, later enlarged between 1900 and 1909. The combination of manor house and park reflects the tastes of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Visitors find a private residence with grand interiors and a landscaped park behind the house. The park’s hilly layout, stone garden and mature tree groupings create a quiet setting. The manor’s Neo-Renaissance façades and period details remain largely intact.
