Evangelische Pfarrkirche Großpetersdorf

The Evangelical parish church in Großpetersdorf stands in the market town of Großpetersdorf in the Oberwart district of Burgenland. It belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Superintendentur A. B. Burgenland and is protected as a listed building. The church was built between 1820 and 1823 as a simple hall church on the eastern slope of the village. In 1845 it became a parish church. A restoration took place from 1872 to 1873 when a southern tower with a pyramid roof was added and decorated with fascias. The church’s five-bay nave is covered by narrow transverse barrel vaults between ribs resting on pilasters. An organ gallery supported by iron posts runs along three sides of the nave. The pulpit altar dates from 1872 and the former altarpiece, depicting Christ in Gethsemane, was painted by Carl Hauser the same year. The organ was built in 1839 by Karl Seidelmann and enlarged with a pedal division by Anton Tausz in 1875. Beside the church stands a two-storey Biedermeier parsonage built between 1846 and 1847. A balcony on columns and a gable was added in 1906. The Dehio volume on Burgenland’s art monuments recognises both buildings in its 1976 survey.
