Marienstern Abbey

Marienstern Abbey stands beside the Elbe in Mühlberg, Brandenburg. It began in 1228 when Otto and Bodo of Ileburg founded a Cistercian nunnery on land given by Henry III, Margrave of Meissen. The small brick church was built with Romanesque details and served the town after the nunnery closed in the Reformation. A 13th-century refectory later became part of an estate farm. Since 2000 the Claretian brothers have lived in the restored buildings. The abbey’s history is marked by fires and changes of use. After a blaze in 1565 the church became Mühlberg’s parish church. The refectory was remodelled in 1820 for farming and only in 1992 did restoration begin. Experts repaired the brick Gothic fabric and uncovered medieval layers in the refectory. Visitors find a quiet abbey church with plain Gothic lines and Romanesque arches. The refectory shows the original vaulting and later farm fittings side by side. The cloister garth is small but sheltered, and the Elbe valley can be glimpsed beyond the walls. The setting is rural, with fields and the river forming a calm backdrop to the old stonework.
