St Paul's Church, Winchmore Hill

St Paul’s Church stands on Church Hill in Winchmore Hill, a northern suburb of London within the Borough of Enfield. Built between 1826 and 1827 as one of the ‘Waterloo churches’, it was designed to serve the growing population after the Napoleonic Wars. The site was donated by Walker Gray of Grovelands, with most of the building costs covered by the Church Building Commissioners. The church’s simple rectangular nave, supported by queen post trusses spanning 45 feet, reflects the functional style of early Commissioners’ churches. Its iron rainwater hoppers, cast in St John’s Wood, bear a cross motif. The building is listed and sits within the Winchmore Hill conservation area. The church’s interior tells a story of gradual change. Early features included whitewashed walls, curtained windows, and a central pulpit with a barrel organ in a rear gallery. Heating came from two stoves that left some seats too warm and others cold. Box pews, either rented or free, carried name cards or black crosses. After becoming a separate parish in 1851, the church saw Victorian improvements: a carved oak altar and pulpit in 1846, stained glass of St Paul’s life in the 1840s, and gas lighting in 1864—fifteen years before the village had public gas supply. A hand-blown organ followed in 1876, and in 1882 the box pews were replaced. Today, the church retains its Victorian chancel with a south aisle and north vestries, added in 1889. The east window by Clayton and Bell shows the Ascension with inscriptions and symbols. The font, made of marble and alabaster, stands in late Decorated Gothic style. A reredos depicting The Last Supper and an oak eagle lectern were installed around 1899–1900. The Garden of Rest, opened in 1961, holds cremated remains between the church and hall. Inside, memorials and an aumbry for reserved sacrament remain visible, while the sanctuary includes a piscina with a drain to the ground.
