The Friedberg town hall stands in the middle of the old town on Marienplatz, a stately Renaissance building that was rebuilt around 1680 by a pupil of Augsburg’s master builder Elias Holl after war damage in the 17th century. Inside, the council chamber still holds vivid frescoes by Munich history painter Josef Widmann from 1892 and a coffered ceiling from the original construction period. The tower, reconstructed in 1911, rises above the square, marking the spot where Friedberg’s grain store and market once operated on the west side. A plaque on the south façade recalls Pope Pius VI’s brief stop in the town on 2 May 1782, when he passed through on his journey from Vienna to Augsburg. The east wing once housed a baker’s shop and the city toll office, where duties were collected. The building’s varied past shows how closely its rooms once served daily trade and civic life. Visitors step into a cool, high-ceilinged entrance hall and then into the council chamber, where the frescoes glow under the original beams. The tower stair offers a quiet climb to a small viewing platform above the square, where red roofs stretch toward the horizon. Around the building, cobbled lanes lead to other historic corners of Friedberg’s well-preserved old town.
