Schloss Bertoldsheim

Schloss Bertoldsheim is a Baroque two-storey three-wing building with a three-storey hip roof. It stands on the edge of a rocky projecting hill, a southern outlier of the Swabian-Franconian Jura, in the Bertoldsheim district of the market town of Rennertshofen. The site is protected as a monument under two separate entries in the Bavarian heritage register. The older record describes it as a late medieval to early modern castle site, while the newer one classifies the present structure as a Baroque palace. The palace was commissioned in the early 18th century by Freiherr Franz Fortunat von Ysselbach, a general in several armies. He employed Gabriel de Gabrieli, court building director in Eichstätt, to design the new residence and its twenty-five-day-work park. Later owners included the Hornstein family, who added interior decorations and a lime-tree avenue, parts of which survive. In 1800 the estate passed to Graf Charles Dumoulin-Eckart, whose descendants kept it until 2008, when the present owners began a full restoration that won the Bavarian Denkmalschutzmedaille in 2022. Visitors approach the palace across the carefully tended park laid out in the 1720s. The main building’s two storeys contain reception rooms with original stucco and painted ceilings. Outside, the lime avenue leads towards the hill’s edge, offering wide views over the surrounding countryside. The stable court and ancillary wings frame the forecourt, completing the symmetrical Baroque ensemble.
