Burgstall Rohrbach

The Burgstall Rohrbach, also known as Kapellenberg, stands on a hill 378 metres above sea level near the village of Rohrbach in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria. It overlooks the market town of Kallmünz in the Regensburg district. The site is classified as an archaeological monument and appears in the Bavarian state atlas under the reference D-3-6837-0027. Archaeologists have dated its first construction to the late 11th or early 12th century, with the first written record appearing in 1242. Berthold von Hohenburg is named as its owner before control passed to the Bishopric of Regensburg. The remains include a curved outer bailey northeast of the main castle, a neck ditch and an outer defensive system of three ramparts and a ditch. At the centre of the site stands a cemetery chapel that was once a Catholic pilgrimage church. Parts of the original 12th-century castle chapel survive within its walls. A cemetery surrounds the chapel. During the enlargement of the burial ground in 1832 the castle mound, where the keep once stood, was largely removed. Today the hill is a protected archaeological site. Visitors can walk among the grassy ramparts and ditches that mark the castle’s outline. The chapel and cemetery remain in use, giving the hill a quiet, reflective atmosphere. From the summit there are wide views over the surrounding countryside. The site offers a clear sense of how medieval fortifications were shaped by the landscape.
