Denkmal für Herzog Ludwig den Reichen

The bronze statue of Duke Ludwig the Rich stands on the Trinity Square in Landshut, a town in Lower Bavaria. It was commissioned in 1858 by King Ludwig I of Bavaria and designed by sculptor Friedrich Brugger in the classical style. The square itself is framed by historic buildings and opens towards the river Isar. Ludwig the Rich ruled Bavaria-Landshut from 1450 to 1479 and is remembered for founding the University of Ingolstadt in 1472. The statue shows him in full armour with a helmet at his feet, wearing a ducal crown and an order chain. His right hand holds the university’s founding charter while his left makes a dignified gesture. The figure rises from a stone pedestal inscribed with his name and titles. The rear of the pedestal credits King Ludwig I with erecting the monument in 1858. Visitors find the statue set against the backdrop of the Isar valley and the old town’s spires.
