Blackborough Priory

Blackborough Priory stands in the flat fields of Norfolk, eight kilometres south-east of King’s Lynn. The priory was a Benedictine house founded in 1150 by Roger de Scales and his wife Muriel for monks, but by 1200 it became a Benedictine nunnery. The site once held nineteen prioresses, beginning with Avelina and ending with Elizabeth Dawney in 1537. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries the buildings vanished, leaving only earthworks and fishponds that supplied the community. The priory’s owners are buried in the nearby churchyard, including four Barons Scales. Today the fields are part of a working farm, but the outlines of the old precinct remain. The priory is worth the journey for anyone interested in medieval women’s communities and their leadership. Between 1200 and 1537 nineteen prioresses governed the house, a rare example of continuous female authority in the Middle Ages. The Barons Scales who founded and supported the priory were powerful East Anglian lords, linking the site to national events such as the Dissolution. The Ordnance Survey still marks the fishponds, showing how the nuns managed resources. Archaeologists recognise the earthworks as part of a larger monastic complex. Visitors can walk the old precinct and imagine the daily life of nuns in the 13th to 16th centuries. A visitor finds a quiet farm track crossing low-lying fields where the priory once stood. The remains include grassy mounds that mark the cloister and the site of the church. A small stream fed the fishponds whose outlines appear on the ground and on maps. The farm buildings stand beyond the precinct, separating the modern landscape from the medieval past. A nearby churchyard contains the graves of the Scales family, linking the place to its founders. The wide skies and open fields give a sense of how isolated the priory was in its time.
