Cultural heritage D-3-6240-0007 in Georgenberg

Georgenberg stands in the Upper Palatinate, a region of rolling hills and forests in north-eastern Bavaria. The village belongs to the district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab and once formed part of the Waldthurn estate. At the end of the 18th century the village counted eight houses and was served by the parish church in Waldthurn. The estate held both high and low jurisdiction over its lands. A small castle once crowned the hill above the village. The castle was rebuilt before 1540 by Georg Christoph von Wirsberg. A report from 1656 describes the site as having good farm buildings and notes that the old castle had already been levelled. Today no visible traces remain above ground; the hilltop is covered by modern houses. The site is protected as an archaeological monument under the reference D-3-6240-0007. Archaeologists recognise the foundations of the early modern castle and its adjoining farmyard. Visitors walk through the quiet streets of Georgenberg and see only the gentle slope where the castle once stood. The surrounding countryside offers long views across the Upper Palatinate hills. No castle walls or towers survive, yet the Bodendenkmal sign marks the exact spot. The village itself remains a peaceful place, its eight old houses grouped around the church. The vanished fortress is remembered in local records and in a 1907 survey of the region’s monuments.
