St Leonard’s-in-the-Fields church

St Leonard’s-in-the-Fields is a Gothic Revival church in Perth, Scotland. It stands on Marshall Place where Scott Street meets, looking down the South Inch park. J. J. Stevenson designed the building between 1882 and 1885. The church is Category A listed, the highest recognition for Scottish heritage. It replaced an earlier wooden studio used by photographer Magnus Jackson from the 1850s until 1884. The site therefore links photography and worship across the 19th century. The interior features a semi-octagonal apse copied from the 15th-century apse of Stirling’s Church of the Holy Rude. The organ came from Morningside United Presbyterian Church. Built in 1881 by Henry Bryceson, a Perth native, it was moved here in 1985 and placed in a new ash case. The church therefore holds both craftsmanship and local history within its walls. Visitors find a quiet place of worship with tall Gothic windows and detailed stonework. The apse’s ribbed vaulting echoes the Holy Rude’s medieval craftsmanship. The organ case stands in the modern sanctuary, blending old pipes with contemporary wood. Outside, the view across the South Inch links the building to the town’s green spaces. The Category A listing recognises its architectural importance. The church remains a place where history, art and community meet.
