Fuchskogel

The Fuchskogel is a 1,293-metre mountain in the Gleinalpe range of the Austrian Alps. It stands in the Steiermark region near Frohnleiten, where the municipality’s northern and southern cadastral areas meet. The mountain’s slopes are cut by several small valleys, including the Fuchskogelgraben and the Arzwaldgraben on its southern side. A 909-metre saddle on the south-east flank links the Arzwaldgraben and Ratlosgraben, once used by farmers but now reached by an asphalted road.
The mountain is a meeting point for walking routes from the Murtal valley and the Gams valley. These paths converge at the Schenkenberg saddle before climbing to the summit. The Gmoa Alm, a seasonal alpine hut, lies about 200 metres west of the saddle and offers refreshments during the walking season. A second hut, the Plotscherbauer, sits south of the Zöllerkogel and can be reached by a public gravel road, providing another route to the Fuchskogel from the west.
At the summit, visitors find open grassland with views across the surrounding ridges. The Fuchsfelsen, a striking rock formation, rises about 200 metres west of the Gmoa Alm and breaks the gentle landscape. To the east, the terrain falls away toward the Mur valley, while to the west it rises again toward the Haneggkogel and other unnamed peaks. The contrast between the open slopes and the solitary rock outcrop makes the Fuchskogel a quiet but memorable destination.
