Castle Park View

Castle Park View stands on the south-eastern edge of Castle Park in Bristol, on the site of the former Central Ambulance Station. The development consists of five blocks arranged around a courtyard, with a 26-storey tower designed by Chapman Taylor as its centrepiece. The blocks contain 375 flats in total, including 300 for private rent and 75 affordable homes. The tower rises 86.6 metres and is Bristol’s tallest occupied building. It overlooks the restored spire of St Mary Redcliffe, which it overtopped during construction. The site lies within the former setting of Bristol Castle and beside the culverted River Frome. The development’s history is tied to the city’s post-war rebuilding and later redevelopment debates. The Central Ambulance Station, built in the 1960s, once occupied the site before its demolition left the plot vacant. Negotiations increased the share of affordable housing from 12 per cent to 20 per cent, resulting in 75 homes. Archaeological work during construction uncovered substantial 17th-century masonry, including a long sandstone wall nearly 20 metres long. The tower’s construction marked the end of a height record held since 1872. In 2025, a fire in one block led to the evacuation of 188 residents, with no serious injuries reported. Visitors approach Castle Park View through a central courtyard framed by the blocks. The tower’s façade combines pale stone, brick cladding, and dark window bands, with a castellated crown at the summit. The development connects to Bristol’s district heat network, drawing energy from the Floating Harbour. Photovoltaic panels and brown roofs were added to support biodiversity. The affordable block is managed separately by Abri, with shared ownership and rental options. Views from the tower stretch across Castle Park and the city, though debates continue over its impact on the skyline.
