Geyso-Schloss
Geyso-Schloss Mansbach stands in Mansbach, a village in eastern Hesse. The castle was built between 1577 and 1578 by Wilhelm von Mansbach on the site of a former fortress destroyed in 1276. It was later renamed after Johann von Geyso, a Hessian general, who expanded the estate in the 17th century with a cavaliers’ house and a coachman’s house. Further changes in 1878 gave the castle its present appearance. After military use in the 20th century, it became state property in 1947 and later housed a school for horse breeding until 1950. The castle is a two-storey rectangular building with nine window bays and curved gables. A striking octagonal stair tower with a segmental dome rises from the roof on the park side. The courtyard entrance features a Renaissance portal with symbolic sculptures. A half-timbered extension houses the local history museum, while the main building contains private flats and holiday lets. The Geyso family chapel, built in 1683 on the hilltop cemetery, once served as a family crypt and is noted for its rich interior decoration. Visitors can explore the museum in the timber-framed wing, which tells the story of the village and the estate. The main building hosts cultural events organised by the Sonnenzeit association, including the Open Air Mansbach Music and Arts Festival from 2015 to 2017. The chapel, though currently closed for repairs, remains a landmark of the estate’s history. The surrounding park and the hilltop cemetery offer quiet walks with views over the countryside.
