St. Martin (Blindheim)

St Martin’s parish church stands in the centre of Blindheim, a small village in Bavaria. Built in the late Gothic style, it was enlarged in the 18th century and remodelled in Baroque fashion. At the start of the 20th century the interior was redesigned and frescoed. The church’s history is marked by three building phases. The choir dates from the late Gothic period, the nave was rebuilt in the Baroque era and the nave was remodelled again in 1907–08. The tower was heightened twice, first in 1658 by Johann Serro and again after a fire in 1861. The Baroque high altar was installed in 1792, and the present organ was added in 1899. Inside, the church has three naves separated by square piers. The ceiling shows frescoes by Leonhard Thoma from 1908, depicting scenes from the life of St Martin and New Testament stories. The choir is raised and vaulted, with pilasters and a Baroque high altar. The furnishings include 18th-century choir stalls, a 17th-century limestone font and side altars from 1883.
