Burg Betzenstein

Burg Betzenstein stands high above the town of Betzenstein in Upper Franconia. It is a medieval hilltop castle built on the 512-metre Schlossberg. The site overlooks the surrounding Franconian Switzerland landscape. The castle was first mentioned in 1311 when Konrad von Schlüsselberg was enfeoffed by the Bamberg bishop. Earlier, around 1187, it had served as the seat of the ministerial Friedrich von Betzenstein. The castle once formed part of a double complex, with separate sections for the bishop and the lords of Leuchtenberg. The castle’s history reflects the power struggles of the region. In 1327, part of the fortress passed to the Crown of Bohemia. By 1359, the entire site belonged to the Leuchtenberg landgraves, who fortified the nearby market town. Destruction came in the early 15th century during the Bavarian War, followed by a fire in the Second Margrave War. Rebuilding took place in the 16th and 17th centuries, though later alterations changed parts of the structure. Today, the ruins remain privately owned and are not open to the public. Visitors see the remains of the medieval stronghold on two rocky outcrops. The northern part preserves a single-storey building from 1558 with a hipped roof and a high base. The southern section features a two-storey round tower topped with a pyramid roof, built around 1630. A cistern from the 17th or 18th century and fragments of curtain walls from the 16th century can also be found. The site is recognised as a protected monument and shapes the local scenery.
