All Saints Church, Burton in Lonsdale

All Saints Church stands on High Street in the small village of Burton in Lonsdale, North Yorkshire. It is an active Anglican parish church designed in the Early English style by the Lancaster firm Paley and Austin between 1868 and 1876. The building was planned larger than needed because the railway was expected to arrive and the population to grow. Its benefice was later joined with the nearby parish of St Oswald in Thornton in Lonsdale. The church is listed at Grade II* on the National Heritage List for England and faces the site of Burton in Lonsdale Castle across the road. The church is built of sandstone with a slate roof and a wooden porch with tiled roof. The tower has three stages with buttresses, lancet windows, and a broach spire. Inside, the nave and north aisle are separated by an arcade with a glass screen added around 1970. The chancel contains a piscina and a double sedilia, and the east window has three stepped lights with smaller windows above. Six bells cast in 1870 by John Warner and Sons hang in the tower. The churchyard wall and gates are also included in the listing. Visitors find a quiet churchyard with a well-kept wall and gates. The interior offers a clear view of the arcade and chancel fittings. The tower’s lancet windows and broach spire stand out against the slate roof. The glass screen in the arcade divides the nave from the aisle while allowing light to pass through. The east window’s stepped design and smaller lights create a pattern of shapes and shadows. The churchyard wall and gates frame the entrance on High Street. The building remains a peaceful place for worship and reflection.
