Arbesbach

The Arbesbach is a small stream in Döbling, the 19th district of Vienna. It is also known as the Erbsenbach and Sieveringerbach and runs for 4.3 kilometres through the suburb of Sievering. The stream is a tributary of the Krottenbach and mostly flows through the Vienna Woods. Its headwaters form where several springs meet between the Dreimarkstein and the Latisberg. The Arbesbach then flows along the left side of Sieveringer Straße before turning to the right near the Spießweg. The stream is worth noting for its history and the way it shaped Sievering. Its name comes from the Middle High German word for pea, referring to the wild peas that once grew along its banks. In the past, the Arbesbach often caused flooding due to the geology of the Vienna Woods. Efforts to enclose the stream began in the late 19th century to reduce flooding and unpleasant smells. By the mid-20th century, more sections were covered to address these issues. Visitors to Sievering can still trace parts of the Arbesbach’s original course. The stream once flowed past the Sievering parish church and the former Helenenbad near the Schatzlsteig. Today, its path is marked by footpaths and streets like the Arbesbachgasse. The enclosed sections of the stream run beneath Sieveringer Straße, hidden from view. The stream’s history is reflected in the names of local streets and landmarks.
