Vreden Castle

Burg Vreden was a late medieval castle built in 1398 by the Bishop of Münster inside the old town of Vreden. Its earlier structure, lost in a fire in 1324, was never rebuilt. Over the centuries the castle often served as security for loans, and by 1586 it was described as very weak. Repairs were made during the War of the Spanish Succession, yet by 1608 it stood empty and ruined for eighty years before a Baroque official house replaced it in 1699. Today that house, enlarged over time, houses the town hall of Vreden. Excavations and a 1608 drawing allow the castle’s layout to be reconstructed. Set into the north-east corner of the town wall, the castle formed a rectangular courtyard entered through a gate tower on that side. A second line of defence with another gate and drawbridge was added outside the main walls. Later parts of the site were built not in brick but in poured masonry. On the eastern edge, where the outer bailey joined, stood the bishop’s private chamber above a gatehouse. A large tower once stood at the western corner near today’s Alstätter Straße; part of its foundations was found and preserved during digs. The remains lie beneath the modern town centre, close to the town hall. The castle’s outline is marked on the pavement, and information boards explain what once stood where. Visitors can walk the old perimeter and see fragments of the foundations set into the ground. The site sits quietly among shops and streets, offering a clear picture of how the fortress once defended the town.
