All Saints' Church, Wing

All Saints’ Church in Wing stands on the western edge of the Buckinghamshire village, five kilometres southwest of Leighton Buzzard. Built mainly between the 8th and 11th centuries, it is one of England’s oldest surviving parish churches and carries Grade I listing. The Anglo-Saxon masonry includes the apse, crypt, north wall and pillars, while the 10.6-metre three-nave structure dates from the same period. A single Anglo-Saxon window survives above the choir in the east gable. The church’s history begins with seventh-century missionaries who Christianised the region from Aylesbury, and the first written record of Wing appears between 966 and 975. The church’s significance lies in its continuous use and layered architecture. After the Norman Conquest, oversight passed to a French monastery, then to St Albans Priory during the Hundred Years War. From the 13th to 15th centuries the local lord acted as patron, overseeing changes in Decorated and Perpendicular styles. The 15th-century bell tower, visible from afar, houses six bells, four cast between 1638 and 1654 by the Knight foundry in Reading. The oak bell chair and the 1654 baptismal font remain in daily use. Notable artworks include a 14th-century coronation of Mary window, carved wooden ceiling angels, and royal figures along the ceiling edge. Inside, visitors find the ninth-century apse above an eighth-century crypt, the tall nave arcades, and the 15th-century wooden ceiling with its angel carvings. The tower gallery now holds a Walker organ installed in 2002. Tombs of the Dormer family line the north aisle, including memorials to Sir Robert Dormer and the first Baron Dormer. Nineteenth-century stained glass fills the clerestory, and the south and north porches retain their 14th- and 15th-century doorways with heraldic carvings. The churchyard and surrounding lanes offer quiet views across Wing’s gently rolling countryside.
