Filialkirche Heiliger Georg, Danielsberg

A Catholic branch church dedicated to Saint George crowns the summit of the Danielsberg, a 966-metre hill in Reißeck, Carinthia. The first stone chapel, built around 313, was later replaced by a Romanesque-Gothic church begun in 1127. After fires and restorations, a Baroque tower was added in 1750, and the interior was reshaped over the centuries. The church holds layers of local history. A 1480–1520 fresco of the Last Judgement in the apse was once badly damaged by water. The main altar of 1633 carries a painted antependium by a local artist named Kreidl, flanked by side altars with scenes of Daniel in the lions’ den and the Holy Family. A massive wooden panel from about 1670 shows the Lamentation of Christ. Visitors find the church’s east wall dominated by a huge 1708 Georgsstafel, a 24-panel cycle of Saint George’s martyrdom. Nearby hangs a copy of the Merciful Jesus as painted after the visions of Saint Faustina Kowalska. The south wall displays statues of Saint Andrew and Saint Jerome from around 1700, while the rear east wall bears a 17th-century Last Judgement. Some original benches from 1515 remain, their high seats later lowered to form backs.
