Hoher Zinken

The Hoher Zinken is a 1,764-metre peak in the Osterhorngruppe of the Salzkammergut mountains. It stands between St Gilgen and Strobl on the northern shore of the Wolfgangsee and Abtenau in the Lammertal to the south. The summit lies entirely within Abtenau’s municipal boundary, though the municipal border with Strobl runs just below along a hunter’s path. The summit is rocky but carries scattered trees. From the top walkers look across the central Osterhorngruppe to the Schafberg and, on clear days, the distant Dachstein. On the north-west flank a Natura 2000 site protects the Zinkenbach-Karlgraben valley, source of the Königsbach stream. A usual route starts at the Leit’n Alm near Hintersee-Lämmerbach or the Genneralm above Abtenau. It passes the Posch’n Hütte and climbs a stony track to a shoulder belonging to the Holzeck. From there a col between the Königsbach and Ackersbach valleys leads on to the summit in about three hours. Other paths follow the Zinkenbach from Abersee, or climb via the Königsbacher Alm or the Schreinbach waterfall to the Zinkeneckalm and the north ridge. In winter the mountain is a popular, easy ski tour from Lämmerbach over the Genneralm to the top.
