St Michael's Church, Garston

St Michael’s Church stands in Garston, a district of Liverpool, on Church Road between gas holders and a railway line. Built in the 19th century, it replaced earlier churches on the same site, the first dating from 1225 and the second from 1715. Designed by Thomas D. Berry and Son, the present building uses buff rock-faced yellow sandstone with red ashlar dressings. The church has a nave, aisles, transepts, a chancel with an apse, and a northwest tower with angle buttresses. Its exterior features include a crocketed hood over the north entrance, clock faces on three sides, and Geometrical tracery in the west window. The church holds notable interior features, such as a reredos with opus sectile and mosaic panels. Stations of the Cross designed by May L. G. Cooksey run around the walls as a frieze. The chancel contains stained glass windows from 1886 by Shrigley and Hunt, and the pipe organ was installed by Rushworth and Dreaper in 1938. Nine stained glass windows at the east end memorialise members of the Lightbody family, including John, Robert, and Mary Ann Lightbody. The church also has a ring of eight bells cast by John Warner & Sons in 1877 and 1878, gifted by Mary Ann Lightbody. Visitors find a Grade II listed building with a mix of architectural styles and historical details. The churchyard contains a possible 17th-century sundial shaft, adding to the site’s older history. Inside, the Stations of the Cross and stained glass windows provide artistic and spiritual interest. The organ and bells reflect the church’s musical heritage, while the sandstone exterior and tower give the building a solid presence. The setting between industrial structures contrasts with the church’s traditional design, creating a distinctive atmosphere.
