Beinn Bhrotain

Beinn Bhrotain is a Munro and Marilyn mountain in Aberdeenshire’s central Cairngorms. Its Gaelic name means ‘hill of the mastiff’. The broad massif lies about twenty kilometres west of Braemar and twenty-five kilometres south-east of Aviemore. It sits south of the highest peaks around Ben Macdui and Braeriach, forming a complex ridge system with subsidiary summits. The mountain’s eastern and north-eastern flanks drop steeply into Glen Dee, while the north faces Glen Geusachan. To the west and south the slopes are gentler, covered in moss and heather that fade into moorland. A 975-metre col links the main summit to the nearby Monadh Mòr. Two unnamed subsidiary tops, 1108 and 1020 metres high, stand east of the summit, with the north-east ridge descending toward the Dee valley. The Càrn Cloich-mhuilinn, a Munro-Top south-east of the main peak, was once listed as a separate Munro. In 1981 the Scottish Mountaineering Club reclassified it for lacking enough independence. Hugh Munro himself never climbed it before his death. Walkers usually start from Linn of Dee or Glen Feshie, following the Dee upstream to reach the south-east ridge and then the summit plateau.
