Heiligenberg

Heiligenberg rises near Naumburg in northern Hesse, a forested ridge between Altendorf and Heimarshausen. Mixed oaks and pines cover its slopes, and the Habichtswald Nature Park surrounds it. The Elbe, a tributary of the Eder, flows east of the mountain. A 9-metre-high sandstone block called the Riesenstein von Heimarshausen stands on the southeast flank at 318.2 metres.

Archaeologists recognise the Riesenstein as a prehistoric cult site and astronomical marker. Excavations show it was used for sacrifices and as an observatory in the Bronze Age. The rock’s jagged surface and red-and-white bands make it a striking landmark. Today it is protected as a natural monument.

Visitors walk through quiet woodland to reach the giant stone. The path climbs gently from Heimarshausen, passing mossy oaks and beech trunks. At the top of the rock, views extend over the lowlands towards the Eder valley. The site is peaceful, with only the sound of wind in the branches and the occasional birdcall.
