Kurtheater Norderney

The Kurtheater Norderney stands on the northern edge of the Kurplatz in the heart of the North Sea island of Norderney. Built in 1894 in the style of a small royal theatre modelled on Hanover’s opera house, it is one of the oldest theatres in East Friesland. The city took it over in the 1920s and since the 1950s it has been home to the Landesbühne Niedersachsen Nord. A cinema has operated inside since 1923 and it hosts the International Film Festival Emden-Norderney. The building was placed under monument protection in 1987 and after cracks appeared in 2019 it was closed for restoration until autumn 2021. The theatre’s early seasons were shaped by Carl Waldmann, who ran both the Norderney house and his private theatre in Hanover. His ensemble of forty-two actors and twenty-six technicians offered mainly light comedies by authors such as Adolph L’Arronge and Franz von Schönthan. A one-act operetta by Offenbach appeared alongside classics like Charley’s Aunt. Prominent guests included Hamburg’s Robert Nhil in a Fulda production and Berlin’s Victor Arnold, who staged Wedekind and Schiller and even premiered a military farce with a pseudonym by Wolf von Baudissin. Visitors today find a restored stage that still programmes plays, concerts and films. The auditorium retains its small-residence charm with tiered boxes and ornate plasterwork. Outside, the Kurplatz’s cafés and shops sit only a short walk away. The Landesbühne Niedersachsen Nord brings regular drama, while the cinema continues to screen festival titles. The building’s 19th-century façade now stands alongside modern cultural life on the island.
