All Saints Church, Little Wenham

All Saints Church stands in an isolated spot near Little Wenham Hall, about one kilometre north-west of Capel St Mary in Suffolk. Built of flint with a brick top stage, it has a nave, chancel, south porch and west tower in three stages. The tower’s buttresses carry flushwork decoration and a stair turret rises on the south face. The east window and porch are plain, while scratch dials mark the former sundial on the south wall. The church dates from the 13th century, with a 15th-century porch and tower raised in the 16th century. Inside, the chancel floor is paved with medieval tiles and brick, and five inscribed slabs record 17th- and 18th-century burials. Bright wall paintings show the Virgin and Child and three female saints, while a painted memorial to Sir John Brewse of 1585 fills the south wall. A brass of 1514 depicts Thomas Brewse and his family beneath a canopy. The nave holds a 14th-century font on an octagonal stem, a 17th-century hexagonal pulpit and two linenfold pews. A painted Saint Christopher covers the north wall, and a tomb chest commemorates Gilbert de Debenham of 1371. The churchyard contains a table tomb with iron railings dated 1797 and 1799.
