Fuck Tree

The fuck tree is a sessile oak on West Heath, Hampstead Heath, in north London. It stands in an area known for gay cruising since Victorian times. The tree has a low, spreading trunk shaped for intimate use. Its roots splay like a hand holding a sheet. Sections of bark have been smoothed by frequent contact. The tree appears in literature and art as a symbol of queer desire. Armistead Maupin’s novel describes it as a low-swooping trunk that serves as a chaise for sex. Liz Rosenfeld’s 2017 film *Fuck Tree* portrays the tree and was later soaked in the artist’s ejaculate. Trevor Yeung’s soap sculpture at the Gasworks Gallery reimagined the tree as a monument to human interactions. Visitors find a quiet clearing bordered by thickets on Hampstead Heath. The tree’s prone trunk lies close to the ground, its bark worn smooth by use. Litter from the site was collected for Yeung’s exhibition, reflecting the area’s transient encounters. The Heath remains a place where queer life unfolds in plain sight.
