Kongress & Theaterhaus Bad Ischl

The Kongress & Theaterhaus stands in the heart of Bad Ischl, a spa town in Upper Austria. Built between 1873 and 1875 by architect Hyazinth Michel, it replaced an earlier structure to serve guests of the imperial summer residence. The building was commissioned after the town bought the Pfifferlingfeld site in 1872. A fire in 1965 destroyed much of the original structure, though the theatre hall survived. The city rebuilt it almost exactly as it had been, preserving its imperial-era style and atmosphere. The house became a cultural hub for concerts and balls attended by scientists, artists and members of the imperial court. After the 1997 restoration it was renamed Kongress & Theaterhaus and now hosts balls, cultural events and performances by the Lehár Festival Bad Ischl. The festival is well known for its operetta productions in the town where Franz Lehár once lived. Visitors find a grand theatre hall with ornate imperial-era decoration and modern technical equipment. The building also contains rooms for conferences and smaller cultural events. Its central location in Bad Ischl places it near the town’s spa gardens and the imperial villa. The restored façade and interior evoke the elegance of the 19th century. The theatre’s programme ranges from classical concerts to contemporary performances.
