Oldenburgisches Staatstheater

The Oldenburgisches Staatstheater stands in the north-west German city of Oldenburg, Lower Saxony. It began in 1833 as a small wooden playhouse built by carpenter Herman Wilhelm Muck for lawyer and writer Carl Christian Ludwig Starklof, the first director. Grand Duchess Cecilia supported the founding, and the theatre became the Großherzogliches Hoftheater in 1842. A grander stone building in Renaissance style replaced the wood in 1881, designed by court architect Gerhard Schnitger. Fire destroyed that stone theatre in 1891, but it was rebuilt within two years under Franz Noack and Paul Moritz Zimmer. The rebuilt house reopened in 1893 with a large dome roof that held a water tank for fire safety. Inside, baroque-style mouldings, sculptures and frescoes covered walls and ceilings, and electric lights were fitted into the decoration. The stage area gained extra workshop space. Since the Second World War the theatre has been led by a series of general directors, starting with Irene de Noiret and Otto Daue in 1945–46 and continuing to the present director Christian Firmbach. Each leader shaped the theatre’s programmes and reputation over the decades. Visitors enter a richly decorated interior where baroque plasterwork frames the boxes and balconies. The auditorium seats are arranged in a horseshoe shape, focusing attention on the stage framed by gilded proscenium arches. The dome above the stage still holds its original water tank, now a visible part of the building’s history. Outside, the theatre sits beside the old wooden structure’s former site, a quiet square in the city centre. The contrast between the modest 19th-century start and the imposing 1881 building tells the story of Oldenburg’s cultural ambition.
