Schneeglocke

The Schneeglocke is a glaciated peak in the Silvretta range of the Eastern Alps. It stands at 3 223 m in the Montafon region of Vorarlberg, entirely within the province’s borders. To its west lies the Klostertaler Gletscher and to its east the Schneeglockengletscher. The nearest higher summits are the Silvrettahorn 21 m above and the Knoten 33 m below. The mountain is climbed from the Silvretta-Stausee reservoir, where both hikers and ski mountaineers begin. The route follows the Klostertal valley past the Klostertaler Umwelthütte to the Klostertaler Gletscher at about 2 400 m. From there climbers head east across the ice to the summit. In 1960 the Saarbrücken section of the Austrian Alpine Club erected the metal summit cross. On the summit ridge the panorama stretches from the Silvrettahorn in the south-east to the Schattenspitze in the north. Views take in the Klostertaler Gletscher below and the Silvretta-Stausee far below to the west. The glaciated slopes and sharp ridges give the mountain its distinctive shape. The climb demands sure-footedness and ice experience, rewarding those who reach the top with a quiet, high-altitude vantage point.
