Burg Beuggen

Burg Beuggen stands on a ridge above the Rhine near Rheinfelden in Baden-Württemberg. The site once held a 13th-century castle belonging to the Lords of Beuggen, but nothing of the original structure remains today. A street called Burstelstraße marks the spot where the castle once stood. The castle’s tangled history involves several noble families. Ulrich von Liebenberg gave the village and fortress to the Teutonic Knights in 1246, but disputes over ownership dragged on for years. Even King Rudolf of Habsburg had to settle a claim by Mangold of Buchein in 1248. By the 15th century the Lords of Beuggen had moved away and the castle was already abandoned. Visitors today see only the quiet ridge and the Burstelstraße that recalls the vanished fortress. Nearby lies the former commandery of the Teutonic Knights, a reminder of the site’s later role. The surrounding countryside offers views across the Rhine valley and towards the Black Forest.
