Almspitz
The Almspitz is a mountain in the Rottenmann Tauern range, standing at 2,188 metres in the Austrian province of Styria. It rises from a short eastern ridge of the Hochhaide, which reaches 2,363 metres, and connects to it via the jagged Schafzähne ridge. The Schafriedel ridge slopes down from the Almspitz towards the valley on the eastern side. Below its southern slopes lies the Grünersee lake, a small body of water surrounded by alpine terrain. The mountain is reached by unmarked paths starting from Trieben or Hohentauern. These routes wind through remote valleys and forested slopes before opening onto open alpine ridges. The final ascent involves some scrambling over rocky sections where the path fades. The climb rewards walkers with wide views across the Rottenmann Tauern and into the Enns valley far below. On the summit, a simple cross marks the highest point, offering space for a few people to stand at once. The surrounding ridges provide long ridges for ridge walks and scrambles. The Grünersee below appears as a dark green mirror set against grey limestone cliffs. The mountain’s isolation means few visitors arrive outside the summer months, leaving the slopes quiet and the air still.
