The Nikolai Tower stands in Görlitz, a town in eastern Germany. Built before the 13th century, it formed part of the city’s medieval defences. The tower sits between the old town and the Nikolai suburb, linked to three other preserved fortified towers. A fortified gateway once led through the tower, with three gates and a portcullis. After a fire in 1717, its roof was rebuilt in baroque style.

The tower’s military role ended in the 19th century when the gateway and bridge were removed. The last guard left in 1904, and the building later housed a local history society. Their collection of locks, metal mounts and lights remains on display during guided tours. Visitors can also climb the tower for views over the town.

Today the Nikolai Tower serves as both a museum and an observation point. The exhibition inside showcases historical artefacts from the region’s past. The tower’s thick walls and steep staircase reflect its original purpose as a defensive structure. Its location offers a quiet contrast to the busy streets nearby.
