Castle Levan

Castle Levan stands on a quiet rise in Gourock, Inverclyde, a fortified tower house whose oldest parts date from the 14th century. The present structure was enlarged after 1547 and became part of the Ardgowan Estates. In the 19th century a mansion was built a few metres away and kept the same name. The original castle was restored in the 1980s and again in 2016 by its new owner, Kim Munro, who now runs it as a bed and breakfast. The site’s long history is visible in its thick stone walls and high gables. Ardgowan Estates once controlled the surrounding land, linking the castle to wider estate life. The 19th-century mansion still stands close by, blending newer elegance with older stonework. The 1980s renovation saved the tower from ruin and made it safe for visitors. Kim Munro’s 2016 work added modern comforts while keeping the castle’s character. Visitors find a small but striking tower house set among mature trees. The entrance leads into rooms with exposed beams and stone floors. Views stretch over the Clyde to the hills beyond. The mansion nearby offers extra space for guests. The bed and breakfast provides a quiet base for exploring Gourock’s coast and hills.
