South Devon Railway

The South Devon Railway is a heritage line running 10.7 kilometres from Totnes Riverside to Buckfastleigh in Devon. It follows the River Dart for most of its route, with views of the water on one side or the other depending on direction. The railway was first opened in 1872 as a broad-gauge branch to Ashburton, later cut back by road improvements. After closure to passengers in 1958 and to freight in 1962, volunteers saved part of the line in 1969. Today it is run by the South Devon Railway Trust, a charity that owns the freehold. The line carries steam and diesel trains typical of the Great Western Railway, including GWR 1400 Class No. 1420. A rare broad-gauge locomotive, Tiny, is displayed at Buckfastleigh station museum. The railway was named Heritage Railway of the Year in 2007 after volunteers took over in 1991. Trains run daily from late March to October, usually four journeys each way, more at holiday peaks. The only passing loop is at Bishops Bridge, north of Staverton station. Visitors find the station at Buckfastleigh with its museum and workshop. Staverton station serves as the single intermediate stop, with Nappers Halt used for special trains. The route offers close views of the River Dart and its valley. At Totnes Riverside a footbridge links the heritage station to the town and mainline platforms. The railway has appeared in films and television, including a 2023 episode of Beyond Paradise.
