Messerermuseum

The Messerermuseum in Steinbach an der Steyr stands in a former knife factory on Hochgasse 17. It occupies a three-storey building that began as a small stone grinding house in the 15th century. Traces of 17th-century sgraffito plaster on its walls show it was rebuilt over the original structure. The factory itself was raised in 1892 and later joined to the old house by a second storey in 1910. After decades of use by Messerer firms, the building stood empty from 1967 until local historians proposed turning it into a museum.
The museum presents the craft of Messerer and blade-smiths through three floors. The ground floor shows how blades were forged and finished. The first floor recreates the lives of the smiths, their customs and guilds. The second floor traces the trade’s growth, its guild rules, routes to distant markets and links with the church. Exhibits draw on 200 square metres of floor space and include tools, documents and photographs from the original workshops.
Visitors walk through rooms that once housed grinding wheels and forges. Original machinery and workbenches remain in place. Panels explain how water from the Steyr powered the wheels and how families organised their lives around the trade. Outside, the building sits beside the river where the first workshops stood in 1477. The setting and the exhibits together bring to life a craft that shaped the village for centuries.
