Muchalls Castle

Muchalls Castle stands on a knoll above the North Sea in Aberdeenshire’s rolling countryside. Its lower walls, built in the 13th century by the Frasers, form a sturdy Romanesque tower house. In the 17th century the Burnetts of Leys raised the present L-shaped castle, completed in 1627. The site entered national history in 1638 when Covenanters met here before the English Civil War. Architectural historian Nigel Tranter called it one of the most interesting castles in north-east Scotland. The castle’s design includes a west wing and four-storey blocks linked by crow-stepped gables. The plaster ceilings in the principal rooms rank among Scotland’s finest 17th-century examples. Heraldic shields of the Burnett family mingle with biblical scenes on walls and overmantels. The Great Hall fireplace shows King James VI’s arms flanked by Egyptian-style figures. A secret passage called the Laird’s Lug lets the lord listen to conversations below. Medieval rooms survive intact on the ground floor, including a dungeon with original hinges and a kitchen with a walk-in fireplace and hidden servants’ stair. Visitors walk through terraced gardens laid out in the 17th century. The woodland policy of towering sycamore, elm and beech shelters rook and jackdaw colonies. To the south and west, thinner trees frame wide views over the valley and sea. Inside, the second floor holds the Ladies’ Drawing Room and Gentlemen’s Study, their ceilings covered in plasterwork. Above, bedrooms named for the Laird, Priest, Queen and Queen’s Winter Room retain their fireplaces and Victorian-era bathrooms. The estate’s mature trees and stone walls create a quiet setting above the coastal winds.
