St Garmon's Church

St Garmon’s Church stands in the small village of Capel Garmon in Conwy, Wales. It is a single-chamber Anglican church, now closed and used as a builder’s store. The exterior is partly rendered, and its windows have plate tracery. In the 19th century, the Lancaster architect E. G. Paley restored and reseated the building between 1862 and 1863. During the work, the south wall was rebuilt, new windows were installed, and a porch and north vestry were added. The church is worth the journey for its modest but carefully planned restoration. Paley’s work increased seating from 145 to 150, showing attention to practical detail. The £880 cost, equivalent to about £100,000 today, reflects the care taken in the 19th-century renovation. Though no longer a place of worship, its architectural features remain intact. The church’s simple design and careful craftsmanship make it a quiet point of interest. Inside, the single chamber is plain and uncluttered, with rows of seating arranged for a small congregation. The renewed windows allow light to enter through their plate tracery. The added porch and vestry show how the building was adapted for use. Though now a builder’s store, the church still holds the quiet imprint of its past. Its modest scale and unassuming presence make it a subtle reminder of the village’s history.
