Freisitz Mühlleiten

The Freisitz Mühlleiten stands beside the Traun in Traundorf, a district of Gmunden in Upper Austria. It is a two-storey residence with a round lookout tower and an attached mill and sawmill. The building has passed through many noble and merchant families since the 16th century. Owners have included the Jörger, the Seeau, the Plass and the Schmidt von Schmidtberg families. In 1827 the mill was bought by Franz Kurz, a miller from Hallstatt, and became known locally as the Kurzmühle. Later it was turned into a sawmill, then a wood-grinding works, and finally a paper mill. Today the property remains in private hands and serves as a home. Visitors can see the well-kept main house, the old mill building and the sawmill along the riverbank. The round tower still offers a view over the Traun valley. The setting combines gentle riverside meadows with the quiet streets of Traundorf.
