Russisch-Preußisches Denkmal

The Russisch-Preußisches Denkmal stands beside the road from Güldengossa to Liebertwolkwitz, about 800 metres west of Güldengossa itself. It occupies part of the southern battlefield of the 1813 Battle of Leipzig, a protected landscape. Close by is Apelstein No. 2, one of the stone markers erected in the 1860s by writer Theodor Apel to show where troops were positioned. The monument was built in 1988 to mark the 175th anniversary of the battle. On 16 October 1813 the site was held by the Second Allied Column, 10,000 men under General Prince Eugen of Württemberg, who opened the Battle of Wachau with forty-eight guns at eight in the morning. The inscription recalls this moment in German and Russian, giving both the Prussian and Russian units involved. A paved square of about six by six metres supports the monument. A sloping pedestal carries a cube bearing the German inscription and the date 16 October 1813, with a matching Russian text and the date 28 October 1813 on the reverse. The sides name the Prussian Brigade Klux and the Second Russian Corps. Above a narrow truncated cone topped by a sphere sits a heraldic band pointing north, south, east and west.
