Pfarrkirche St. Severin Salzburg

St. Severin is a modern Roman Catholic parish church with a community centre in Salzburg’s Langwied district, close to the Sam settlement. The building once housed a factory before it was converted in the early 2000s. It stands on the edge of a residential area, surrounded by quiet streets and small gardens. The church is dedicated to Saint Severin of Noricum, a 5th-century missionary. After years as part of nearby parishes, it became an independent parish in 2001. Today it serves several city districts in Salzburg’s north-east. The church is worth visiting for its unusual history and role in the community. The conversion of a former factory into a parish centre was completed in 2006 under architect Peter Schuh. Archbishop Alois Kothgasser consecrated the altar and dedicated the church that same year. In 2011 a historic organ with 18 registers was installed, moved from a closed church in Germany. The organ was rebuilt and revoiced for its new home by Stephan Mayer. A concert marking its arrival featured works by Bach, Reger and Muffat. Inside, the former factory spaces have been divided into a nave, chapel, sacristy and meeting rooms. A new wing contains a large foyer, parish hall and offices. The sacrament chapel is open for quiet prayer during the day, reached through a small garden path. The organ sits in the gallery above the entrance, its mechanical keys and electric stops still in use. Groups meet in the seminar rooms, while the parish hall hosts events for local organisations. The building remains a lively centre for Langwied and Sam.
