Vorderkaserklamm

The Vorderkaserklamm is a deep gorge carved by ice-age forces in the Loferer Steinbergen near St Martin bei Lofer and Weißbach bei Lofer. It was hollowed out by the Ödenbach stream, which still cuts deeper every year. The gorge runs for 400 metres and drops 80 metres, narrowing to just 80 centimetres at its tightest point. The walkway through the gorge uses 51 wooden bridges, 35 stair flights and 373 steps. First opened to walkers in 1882, the gorge became a protected natural monument in 1977. Each year the stream wears the rock away by about six millimetres, steadily deepening the cleft. Visitors follow the raised path through the narrowest sections, where sheer walls rise on either side. Nearby there is a small snack station, a nature trail and other marked walks. The Seisenbergklamm and the Lamprechtsofen cave lie within easy reach from the same area.
