Georgian Theatre Royal

The Georgian Theatre Royal stands in the market town of Richmond, North Yorkshire. Built in 1788 by actor-manager Samuel Butler, it is one of Britain’s oldest surviving playhouses. Butler ran a circuit of theatres across northern England, though Richmond’s is the only one still operating today. After his death, the theatre passed to his widow and later their son. Performances stopped in 1830, and the building became an auction house in 1848. It reopened in 1963 under a non-profit trust and has since undergone major restorations. The theatre has hosted famous performers including Edmund Kean, Dame Sybil Thorndike and Dame Judi Dench. Its collection includes the world’s oldest surviving stage scenery, the Woodland Scene, painted around 1820. The museum opened in 2016, displaying artefacts from the theatre’s history. The Paul Iles Learning Centre provides space for youth theatre and community events. Fundraising campaigns have restored the building and added modern facilities. Visitors find a fully restored 214-seat auditorium with two bars and a new box office. The museum showcases the theatre’s past, including rare scenery and memorabilia. The Woodland Scene remains a highlight of the collection. The Paul Iles Learning Centre hosts youth theatre rehearsals and workshops. Performances range from in-house productions to new works at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The theatre’s president, Dame Judi Dench, supports its ongoing work.
