Saint Barbara Church

The Roman Catholic parish church of Hüttendorf stands between two rows of houses in the village of Hüttendorf, part of Mistelbach in northern Lower Austria. Dedicated to Saint Barbara, it belongs to the Mistelbach-Pirawarth deanery within the Vienna archdiocese. The church has been listed as a protected monument since the 20th century. Its history begins with a vicariate mentioned around 1400. The parish itself was founded in 1783. The late-Gothic chapel with its five-sided apse received a southern tower about 1701. Around 1730 the building was turned into a Baroque church and extended by one bay to the west. The exterior shows stepped buttresses on the choir and two diagonal ones on the nave, along with round-arched windows and bull’s-eye openings. The west front has pilasters, an attic zone and a scroll pediment housing a Baroque statue of Saint Barbara. The two-storey tower bears the date 1769 and ends in a bulbous dome renewed after 1945. A small early-Baroque octagonal chapel from the late 17th century stands beside the tower, with an 18th-century Baroque addition to the north. Inside, the nave has three bays, the western one covered by a cross-ribbed vault and the others by barrel vaults with lunettes. The Baroque west gallery rests on arcades, and the choir also has a lunette vault. The north chapel is vaulted with pendentives, while the south chapel displays an eight-part ribbed vault.
